48 children were circumcised in the Home.
There were 3 deaths of infants in the Home :—
One premature child died from debility, the mother had
suffered from accidental haemorrhage. It was placed in
an incubator and oxygen administered contuiuously, but
only lived for 40 hours.
One child, 4 days old, died from congenital heart disease (the
mother also had valvular disease of the heart).
One premature child died from congenital heart disease (mother
suffered from albuminuria). The child was white asphyxiated
at birth, and only lived 17 hours.
One child was stillborn, the infant being a macerated foetus.
The infant mortality rate of children born in the Maternity
Home during the year was 16.0 per 1,000 births, as compared with
45'7 for those born in their own homes. The figure of 45.7 has
been arrived at after deduction of all births and infant deaths in
the Maternity Home and of all infant deaths in the Village Homes,
Barkingside.
It is, therefore, still correct to say that if every mother in
Ilford could have her baby born in a Maternity Home the deathrate
of babies in Ilford could be reduced by considerably more
than one-half.
At the present time the circumstances of those unable to
pay a fee of two guineas per week are enquired into by the
Health Visitors, and a fee is decided on by the Medical Officer
of Health, subject to confirmation by the Maternity and Child
Welfare Committee.
