One patient paid an extra fee of 15s. for the services of the
District Midwife after leaving the Home.
112 of the above patients paid an additional fee of 15s. to the
Council for the services of one of the midwives of the Home.
The work of training pupil midwives has continued in a
satisfactory manner; three who were engaged during the year
were successful in passing the examination of the Central Midwives
Board.
New Maternity Home.—The construction of the new Maternity
Home is now being proceeded with, and the new building
should be in occupation during the year.
District Midwife.—During 1924 the District Midwife, Miss
Butcher, has attended 72 cases; of these 26 were delivered by
doctors and 46 by herself. A doctor was called in, however, in
16 of the latter cases for the following causes :—
Hyperemesis 1
Ante-natal 6 Contracted pelvis 2
Albuminuria 3
Transverse presentation 2
During labour 4 Delayed labour 1
Miscarriage 1
Post partum hsemorrhage 2
Ruptured perineum 1
After labour 5 influenza 1
Varicose veins 1
For infant 1 Tongue tie 1
One case was transferred to the Maternity Home owing to
persistent haemorrhage after the confinement.
Of the infants born there were 5 stillbirths due to the following
causes:—
Anencephaly 1
Premature birth 2
Difficult labour 2
One infant died within a few minutes of birth from asphyxia
neonatorum, a doctor being in attendance.
