PREVALENCE OF AND CONTROL OVER INFECTIOUS
DISEASE.
Diphtheria.—Twenty-five eases were notified, a decrease
of 43 from last year; 9 were recorded between 5 and 10 years
of age. One death was recorded under the age of one year,
giving ai death rate of 0.05 per 1,000 of population, and an
incidence rate of 1.3 per thousand of population.
The Public Health Department sent a circular letter to
every practitioner in the District, drawing his attention to the
fact that the acme of treatment in this disease was the
immediate administration of antitoxin in all doubtful cases.
Free antitoxin and a sterilized syringe are always available at
the Nelson Hospital, and at the Council Offices during office
hours.

92 per cent. of the cases were removed to hospital.
