the prevention of the milk from contamination. Samples of
milk have been taken for the purposes of the detection of pus
and dirt, but no action has been required. The approximate
number of cows in the sheds at the end of the year was 120.
Authority has been delegated to the Public Health
Committee by the Council, to take all necessary steps to ensure
the proper carrying out of the Regulations in force for the
control of the milk supply, in so far as these affect the Local
Authority.
HOUSING.
General Housing Conditions in the District.—The
total number of houses in the District at the close of the year
under review was 5,068, of which approximately 3,375 are
occupied by the working classes.
The present population is estimated as being 20,500.
There is still a shortage of houses in the District.
Fitness of Houses.—Generally speaking, the standard
of houses in the District is fair.

Unhealthy Areas .—No particular area has been scheduled as unhealthy under the Housing Acts, but, as in previous years, house-to-house inspections have been carried out under the Housing (Inspection of District) Regulations, and in many instances considerable improvements have been effected.
