[Report of the Medical Officer of Health for Hamlet of Mile End Old Town]

54 23 OCTOBER, 1889.
(1) That your Surveyor submitted application and notice of
Messrs. Harris & Wardrope of their intention to drain the
Jewish Schools into the sewer as shown on accompanying
plan, and your Surveyor in the presence of your Committee
altered such plan whereby the premises are to be drained into
the sewer, Stepney Green, and your Committee resolved to
recommend—That the proceedings approved by your Committee
permitting Messrs. Harris & Wardrope to drain the
Jewish Schools, Stepney Green, into the sewer in Stepney
Green as shown on the plan accompanying their application
as altered by your Committee be approved.
That your Medical Officer of Health and Inspectors brought
up and read Reports for which your Committee beg to refer
your Board to their Report Books.
That your Medical Officer reported as follows:—
"During the two weeks ending October 5th, the
"number of Births was 185. The number of Deaths from
"all causes including the deaths in public institutions out"side
the Hamlet was 78—39 males and 39 females, giving
"a death-rate of 17.4 per 1,000 per annum: that of the
"Metropolis being 16.4 for the same period."
(3) That having regard to the Reports of your Medical Officer
and Inspectors your Committee resolved to recommend—That
notices be served upon the owners of the following houses
and premises, requiring them to perform the following works,
viz.:
(a) No. 25, Willow Street—
To construct a proper drain and provide a proper gully to
the yard.
(b) No. 67, 69, and 79, Ocean Street—
To properly pave the yards thereof.
(c) No. 14, Ocean Street—
To properly cleanse and purify such house.
(a?) Nos. 3, 6, 7, and 9, Moses Almshouses; and 73,
Wellesley Street—
To repair the flushing apparatus to the closets thereat.
(e) Nos. 7 and 9, Moses Almshouses—
To prevent dampness of walls thereof.
(f) No. 12, Moses Almshouses—
To clear the gutter over front door.
(g) The 2 Urinals belonging to Moses Almshouses—
To properly trap the same.
(h) Nos. 5 to 21 (odd), St. Paul's Road; 123, Ernest
Street; 1, 3, 5, 15, 21 to 59 (odd), and 65, Wellesley
Street—
To provide water supply to the closets thereat.
