ANNUAL DEATH RATE.
Upon the basis of our estimated population wo shew a death rate
for the year 1883 of 23.9; this is slightly below (0.3) that of the
previous year; but is considerably above the general metropolitan
rate, which was only 20.4; it is, however, below the rate for the
Eastern Districts of London.
The death rate in the western districts of the metropolis was 19.5;
in the north, 19.1; in the central, 23.2; in the south, 19.4; and in
the east, 24.1.
As before mentioned the death rate for the whole of London was
20.4, and was the lowest ever recorded, as was also the marriage
rate. The birth rate also was lower than in any of the twenty-two
previous years; the year seems to have been one of low rates all round.
In the following table are compared the mortality rates for London
and for Bethnal Green by quarters.
