BIRTHS AND BIRTH RATE.
The number of births registered during the year was 5,310, a rate
of 41.37 per thousand population. The rate is a little higher than that
of last year, and considerably above that of London, which was 33.9.
As the mortality in the first year of life is always great, our high
birth rate probably helps to keep up the death rate.
MARRIAGES.
In this parish there are fourteen churches, fifteen chapels, and
one Register office licensed for marriages. Of these there were
in the
First quarter 537
Second 614
Third 676
Fourth 775
Total 2,602
This total indicates a marriage rate of 20.27 to every thousand
persons, or, as in each marriage there are two contracting parties,
40.54 per thousand of our population enter the bonds of matrimony
every year.
Forty-one of these weddings were purely civil contracts, celebrated
in the presence of the Registrar; twenty-two of them took place in
chapels; and nineteen at the Registrar's office.
