The extent of the parish is 755 acres; about seventeen of which are
water. There is an average population of 170 persons to the acre, and
7.2 inhabitants to each house.
BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in the parish during the year
was 3,060 against 3,094 last year, shewing a decrease of 34. This
number, however, includes 142 non-parishioners who have died in
Hospital in Bethnal Green; but as these persons contracted their
illnesses elsewhere, and were only temporarily resident for purposes
of treatment, their deaths are excluded. On the other hand I have
received information from the General Register Office of the Deaths of
154 persons, who though usually resident in Bethnal Green had sought
treatment for their diseases in Hospitals in various parts of the metropolis;
these deaths must therefore be added, raising the nett total
to 3,072.
I may here remark that this is the first year it has been possible
to make an exact statement of the number of deaths amongst
the parishioners of Bethnal Green; for owing to the exertions of Mr.
Shirley Murphy, the Medical Officer of Health for St. Pancras,
arrangements have been made with the authorities of the General
Register Office whereby monthly returns of the deaths of inhabitants
of the various parishes in Hospitals all over London are regularly
forwarded to the different Medical Officers of Health.
I am able to use this information in preparing the monthly
reports I make to the Vestry, thereby rendering them much more
accurate.
The births during the year were 5,310 against 5,256 in the preceding
year. The excess of the births over the deaths was 2,238.
This is 76 more than in the preceding year, as is shewn by the
subjoined table.

The number of rated householders was, in 1881, 14,813, and the rateable annual value of the property in the parish,

£363,592. The age distribution was as under:—
