(b) Articles of Food Surrendered and Seized.—During- the
year the following articles of food were surrendered or seized and
condemned as being unfit for the food of man:—
Surrendered:—
1 box roe. 1 box fresh herrings.
2 lots of skate. 1 box of catfish.
1 box of hake. 2 boxes of smoked sprats.
2 boxes of codling. 1 6-lb. tongue.
2 bojces of dabs. 1 hindquarter of beef.
1 box of kippers. Rump, buttock, thick and trimmings
of beef (13 stone 6 lbs ).
Seized:—
1 piece beef suet. 9 lambs' kidneys.
2 pieces ox kidney. 6 lamb chops.
3 pieces of veal. 1 piece scrag of lamb.
1 target of lamb. 3 sheeps' hearts.
2 half shoulders of lamb.
A letter of warning was addressed to the firm where the above
meat was seized. In addition they were also asked to carry out
certain requirements.
3. Other Foods.
Bakehouses.—There are 30 bakehouses in the district, including
16 factory bakehouses. There is one underground bakehouse.
134 inspections of bakehouses were carried out during
the year.
4. Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.—These Acts are
administered by the Essex County Council. Mr. H. C. Card, the
Chief Inspector, has kindly given me certain particulars, which I
append:—
Samples of milk taken 132
Samples of butter taken 85
Other articles 30
Total 247
Proceedings were taken in one instance against the seller of a
sample of watered milk and a fine of £1 and 5s. costs was imposed
by the Court.
