BIRTHS.
The children registered as born in the parish during the year numbered 4,352.
The boys exceeded the girls by 130, the numbers being respectively 2,241 and 2,111.
The births were distributed thus:—

In the Shoreditch Workhouse Infirmary there were 79 births, 43 males and
36 females. These are included in the numbers occurring in the Haggerston
sub-district.
In the Holborn Union Workhouse, situate in the New Town sub-district 97 births
took place, 56 males and 41 females. Of these 36 were legitimate and 61
illegitimate.* These have to be deducted as the parents were not residents of the
parish. The corrected number of births in the parish was therefore 4,255, and the
birth-rate 34.8, slightly higher than that of 1894, when it was 34.5. The London
birth-rate was 30.5.
In Table XXIX a comparison of the birth-rates in the several sub-districts of the
parish is given.
MARRIAGES.
The Superintendent Registrar informs me that 1,086 marriages were registered
in the parish during the year ending December 31st, 1895. The rate per 1,000
shews a slight increase on that of 1894. The following table compares the rates for
the past three years: —

The proportion of persons married in London, during 1895, was 17.1 per 1000 of
the population.
