BOROUGH OF SHOREDITCH.
The Vestry of the parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch,
IN THE COUNTY OF LONDON.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.
Public Health Department,
March, 1896.
To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch.
Gentlemen,
I beg to submit my report on the public health, sanitary condition, and vital
statistics of the parish, for the year ending December 31st, 1895.
POPULATION.
Excluding the inmates, about 1100 in number, of the Holborn Union Workhouse,
which is situate in the parish, I estimate the population at 122,090, distributed
amongst the four registration districts as follows:—
Shoreditch South 19,840
Hoxton Old Town 28,200
Hoxton New Town 28,700
Haggerston 45,850
The census population in 1891 was 5,355 less than that of 1861. In the
following table are set forth the census populations of Shoreditch from 1801, when
the first one was taken:—
TABLE I.
Census. | Population. | Census. | Population. |
---|---|---|---|
1801 | 84,766 | 1851 | 109,257 |
1811 | 43,930 | 1861 | 129,364 |
1821 | 52,966 | 1871 | 127,164 |
1831 | 68,564 | 1881 | 126,591 |
1841 | 83,432 | 1891 | 124,009 |
The rapid increase during the two decades between 1841 and 1861 is very
striking.
