houses (where there were three return cases of diphtheria), the scarlatinal case
was found to have rhinitis.
No evidence of the spread of the disease by milk was found.
Six cases of diphtheria occurred at the Foundling Hospital in the first half
of the year. There are no other important outbreaks in institutions to record.
Bacteriological Examinations.—256 swabs from St. Pancras patients were
examined during the year by the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine for
the presence of diphtheria baccilus at the expense of the Borough.
Of these 68 gave positive results and 188 negative results.
TYPHOID FEVER.
36 cases were notified as suffering from typhoid fever during 1915,
Of these 36 cases, 12 were afterwards reported not to be suffering from the
disease (by Medical Superintendents of Metropolitan Asylums Board hospitals).
Of the remaining 24 cases, 8 were soldiers admitted to hospitals in the
borough from abroad already suffering from typhoid fever (2) or paratyphoid
fever (6).
The true cases of typhoid fever belonging to the civil population notified
during the year were therefore 16 in number, equal to an incidence rate of
0'08 per 1,000 civil population.
Eight deaths (civil) were certified in 1915 as due to typhoid fever, equal to
a death-rate 0 04 per 1,000 civil population. Three of these were of St.
Pancras patients in outlying lunatic asylums.
Of the 16 notified cases, 5 died, the case mortality being therefore 31 per
cent.

In the following table are set out the number of cases of tvpboid fever notified, the number of deaths certified, and the corresponding rates during the past 10 years:—
