The notification rate of diphtheria per 1,000 population for the County of
London was 2.11. Five Metropolitan Boroughs (exclusive of the City) had
notification rates greater than St. Pancras, and 21 less. The death-rate from
diphtheria per 1,000 population for the County of London was 0.16.

Of the notified cases of diphtheria 425 (or 95 per cent.) were removed to
hospital, as follows:β€”

Return Cases.β€”In six houses cases of diphtheria occurred within 28 days
of the return from hospital to the same house of a former case of diphtheria.
The interval between date of return of first case and date of onset of illness
of second case were 1, 5, 12, 14 and 22 days respectively (no record in one
case). In one case the (?) infecting case had rhinitis, but" in the other 5 cases
there was no history of anything wrong with the (?) infecting case.
In two houses also cases of diphtheria occurred within 28 days of the return
from hospital to the same house of a case of scarlet fever. In one of these
