In 8 out of the 16 laundries, the means provided for draining
off the wet from the floors were insufficient. In every case the
defects have been remedied.
Home Work.—There are 36 persons on the list of Homeworkers,
all except one being employed by firms not carrying on
business in the Borough.
Only two cases of infectious disease have occurred in homeworker's
premises. In both cases the nature of the work and other
circumstances made it necessary to prohibit the carrying on of the
occupation for a time.
Four written notices have been served in respect of defects,
and were at once complied with.
Bakehouses.—There are 40 bakehouses in the Borough, 6 of
these being underground bakehouses.
The latter were reported on in detail last year by Dr. Clothier,
then Medical Officer of Health, and certificates granted in respect
of 4 of them in 1904 and a fifth at the beginning of the year.
The remaining bakehouse, No. 106, Archway Road, has been
practically re-constructed, and has been made into one of the best
of underground bakehouses, and has now been certified.
Both underground and overground bakehouses have been frequently
inspected.
In one case the drainage arrangements were not satisfactory,
and the drainage system has been re-constructed.
In a few cases it has been necessary to require whitewashing
to be done and accumulations of litter to be removed, but as a
whole the premises are in a satisfactory condition and the business
properly conducted.
The dairies, milkshops and cowsheds, numbering 70,
have been regularly inspected, and in 22 instances the attention of
the occupier has been called to contraventions of the bye-laws and
the matter remedied.
It is worthy of note that the premises now on the list for
periodical inspection (e.g., dairies, slaughterhouses, bakehouses,
workshops, etc.) number 412. Twelve months ago the number of
such premises was 152.
