FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT, 1901.
Register of Workshops.—The number of workshops on the
register at the end of 1904 was 231, a decrease of 43 as compared
with the previous year. The decrease is due to the fact that during
a systematic inspection of the workshops it was found that
many workshops on the register had ceased to be used as such.
These were chiefly small workshops used by dressmakers and milliners
who employed one or two assistants, and who frequently
change their addresses or leave the district entirely.
The total number of workshops taken off the register on
account of discontinuing the use thereof was 76.
The new workshops added numbered 33, giving a net decrease
as stated, of 43.
The register now includes the following workshops:—
1904. 1903.
68 Dressmakers 109
20 Milliners 27
6 Bootmakers and repairers 8
7 Cycle makers and repairers 11
5 Farriers 5
3 Picture Frame Makers 4
3 Children's Outfitters 3
10 Tailors 8
16 Laundries 15
2 Tie makers 3
17 Restaurant Kitchens 14

Sanitary Condition of Workshops and Workplaces.—
The principal defect found on inspection was want of cleanliness.
In 54 instances it was necessary to call the occupier's notice to the
dirty condition of the premises, but in no case was there any further
action necessary, as the matter received satisfactory attention.
In 6 workshops the ventilation was inadequate, but in each
case sufficient means of ventilation were provided on request.
Overcrowding was not found to any considerable extent. In
the 4 cases where there was some degree of overcrowding the
nuisance was remedied.
