1910] 6
Area—The area of Islington is 3,092 acres, or nearly five square miles,
and although it is very large, it is exceeded in size by seven other Metropolitan
Boroughs, for Wandsworth has within its boundaries 9,129 acres;
Woolwich, 8,276; Lesvisham, 7,014; Camberwell, 4,480; Lambeth, 4,180;
and Hackney, 3,288 None of these, too, have been entirely built on, so that
there is much room for a considerable increase of their populations On the
other hand Islington possesses little or no spare building land and has been
practically covered with houses
It has already been pointed out in previous reports that although the
gross area of the Borough is 3,092 acres, yet over 291 acres are devoted to
parks or similar open spaces, railways, canals and markets

How these affect the Borough may be seen in the following table:—

In the subjoined Tables (pp 8 and 9) the figures there given have been
calculated on an estimate of the population based on the census returns of
this year, and, therefore, they may be taken to be as nearly correct as it is
possible to get them .
