In view of the fact that the census had not been taken when most of this
report had been prepared, the calculations had been based on the estimate of
the population by the Registrar-General It is not possible in every instance
to eliminate these errors, but they have been corrected as far as possible,
while many statistical tables have been entirely omitted, as the Medical
Officer of Health considers that they would have been entirely misleading
Sub-Districts —The Borough is divided into seven sub-districts for the
purpose of registration At one time there were only two such sub-districts
in the parish of Islington, but from time to time as the borough grew the subdivisions
were increased, the last being made on the ist August 1901, when
the sub-district of Upper Holloway was divided into the three sub-districts of
Tufnell, Upper Holloway and Tollington
Prior to this change, the sub-district of Islington South East had been
apportioned Part of it was added to the sub-districts now known as
Lower Holloway and Barnsbury, and the remainder to the sub-district of
Islington South East The more numerous the sub-districts of the borough
are, the more easily is the exact health of the population gauged, for it is
then possible to ascertain accurately the state of the health of comparatively
small populations contained in them
Wards —The wards are 11 in number, and vary considerably in size
Thus Tufnell and Highbury each contain 417 acres, while Barnsbury extends
over 137 (vide Table II)
