A careful investigation has been carried out with a viewto
determining the exact number of tuberculous patients residing
in the Borough at the end of 1924. This was found to be
1302, distributed as follows : —
District. | Pulmonary Tuberculosis. | Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis. | Total. | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Catford | 256 | 98 | 354 | ||
Lewisham | 123 | 55 | 178 | ||
Hither Green | 108 | 43 | 151 | ||
Forest Hill | 86 | 30 | 116 | ||
Lee | 86 | 24 | 110 | ||
Lower Sydenham | 72 | 36 | 108 | ||
Crofton Park and Brocklev | 67 | 20 | 87 | ||
Bellingham | 57 | 14 | 71 | ||
Upper Sydenham | 45 | 21 | 66 | ||
Ladywell | 22 | 5 | 27 | ||
Hlaekheath | 18 | 7 | 25 | ||
Grove Park | 1 | 2 | 9 | ||
947 | 355 | 1302 | |||
District. | Pulmonary Tuberculosis. | NonPulnionar\ Tuberculosis. | Total. | ||
Men | 472 | 48 | 520 | ||
Women | 397 | 89 | 486 | ||
Children | 78 | 218 | 296 | ||
947 | 355 | 1302 |
The table shows that the new Bellingham Estate has its
fair quota of tuberculous inhabitants : and it may be conjectured
that the Estate now being developed at Grove Park will follow
suit, preference being rightly given to families containing one
or more tuberculous members and who are living under conditions
of overcrowding.
Thus in the whole Borough of 181,900 inhabitants there
is one tuberculous person to every 142 inhabitants, while in the
Bellingham Estate, with its 10,000 inhabitants, the number
works out at one in 140.
