Births.—During the year 5,421 were registered in the Borough.
The corrected number of births was 5,802. This figure is obtained
by adding 646 births which occurred outside the Borough, transferred
by the Registrar-General as belonging to Camberwell, and
deducting 265 births which occurred in the Borough and transferred
to other districts by the Registrar-General.
The annual birth rate was 21-4 per thousand of the population,
as compared with a birth rate of 21-0 for London, and 20-6 for
England and Wales.
Notification of Births Act, 1907.—Under this Act the notification
of a birth, within 36 hours of birth, is a statutory duty of the
father of the child and of any person in attendance on the mother.
During the year 5,256 births were notified, or 90 per cent, of the total
number that were registered.
Of the notifications 3,197 were received from midwives, 1,188
from medical practitioners, 58 from the Camberwell Infirmary and
813 from other persons. A letter was sent to parents, midwives or
medical practitioners in each case where no notification had been
received of a birth subsequent I 3' registered in the Borough.
Still-Births.—Of the 5,256 births notified 135 were returned
as born dead.
Illegitimate Births.—The net illegitimate births for the year
amounted to 176, equal to a rate of 30.3 per 1,000 registered births.
Deaths.—The number of deaths registered during the year as
having taken place in the Borough was 4,023.
Adding 557 deaths of residents of this Borough transferred by
the Registrar-General as having occurred in various parts of England,
and deducting 945 deaths of non-residents which occurred in the
Borough, the corrected number of deaths of residents registered
was 3,635.
