Sixty-nine specimens were forwarded by Medical Practitioners
for bacteriological investigation from patients
suspected to be consumptive; 50 were reported to be
negative, and 19 positive.
Disinfection has been offered and carried out in 66
cases, including 74 rooms and 136 articles of bedding,
etc.; disinfectant has also been supplied to patients to
disinfect sputum, etc.
In my opinion there is a very great need for some
Institution in the district on the lines of the Tuberculosis
or Anti-Tuberculosis Dispensaries how springing up in
various parts of London and the Provinces, whereby
means are provided for definitely not only treating persons
actually suffering from Tuberculosis but searching
out cases, particularly those in the early stage, getting
them placed under appropriate treatment before the disease
has developed too far. Communications have been
received from the Society for the motion of Tuberculosis
Dispensaries, which communication has been
forwarded to the Governors of the Miller Hospital,
as in my opinion it would be far preferable to utilise
the services of an existing Institution in this way rather
than build and develop an Institution solely for this
purpose, which would undoubtedly in a measure become
a competitor with existing Institutions. The governing
body of the Miller Hospital are very kindly taking this
matter into their careful and serious consideration, and I
have hopes that some definite means may be speedily
adopted for the achievement of this object.
