institution, properly conducted, would enable us to grapple successfully
with this disease; firstly, in ascertaining the full extent of the
disease in the Borough ; secondly, by applying curative treatment
to existing cases of the disease; and thirdly, by preventing the
spread of infection. I am in hopes that during the current year
initial steps will be taken to establish such an institution in
Hackney.
I have pleasure in stating that the officers of the Public
Health Department have on the whole carried out the duties
entrusted to them to my entire satisfaction.
Population and Density.—Applying the rate of increase observed
during the last intercensal period to the population of Hackney, I
estimate the population of the Borough to be 237,493 at the end of
June, 1910. Hackney is thus the sixth largest Metropolitan Borough
in point of population. This estimate gives a density of 72.2
persons per acre for the whole Borough, varying from 516 persons
per acre in the North Sub-District, to 105.3 persons per acre in the
South-West Sub-District. The following table gives the population
and density of the Borough and its Sub-Districts, compared with the
whole of London.
