Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1910

During the same period information was received from the
head teachers of the public elementary schools of the Borough of
778 cases of measles occurring amongst their scholars or at the
homes of their scholars. In each of these cases a leaflet on the
prevention of measles was sent to the parent.
Whooping Cough.—There were 57 deaths from whooping
cough in Hackney during 1910. This is an increase of 6 upon the
number occurring during 1909. The mortality rate for 1910 from
this disease is, therefore, .24 per 1,000 living. The death rate for
all London for the same period is .28 per 1,000 living.

During the year information was received from the head

cases of whooping cough occurring amongst their scholars, or at
the homes of their scholars.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.
Tuberculosis.—During the year 1910 there were 46 cases of
pulmonary phthisis voluntarily notified by medical practitioners
practising in Hackney. This is a decline of 12 upon the number
voluntarily notified during 1909. There were in addition, however,
242 cases notified under the Public Health (Tuberculosis)
Regulations, 1908, which came into operation on the 1st January,
1909 (see page 58 for further report on these notifications).
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 128 cases was made
during the same period. In 26 of these the specific bacillus of the
disease was discovered, in 100 cases the result of examination was
