BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in 1909 was
347. Six of these were registered as being illegitimate.
There were 176 boys and 171 girls born. The births exceeded
those for 1908 by 44. The birth-rate per 1000
inhabitants was 28.1 as compared with 25.8 for the year
before. Average birth-rate for past 10 years, 28.93 per
1000 of population. The Notification of Birth Act, 1907,
has not been adopted in this district at present. Births :
First quarter, 81. Third quarter, 79.
Second quarter, 93. Fourth quarter, 94.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths, inclusive of persons residing
here, but dying outside the district, was 116. The outside
deaths amounted to about 15 per cent, of the total
number. These took place chiefly in the Hendon Infirmary,
County Asylums and London Hospitals. This
is an increase of 24 over the total for 1908 and produces
a death-rate of 9.4 per 1000 living, as compared with 7.8
for 1908, which was the lowest yet recorded for this
district.

A very extensive epidemic of measles of a most fatal
and severe type prevailed throughout the district in
March, April and the early part of May, accounting for
no less than 19 deaths, and was the main factor in sending
up the death-rate for the whole year. The disease
in many cases appeared to take on an almost malignant
type, the rash being extremely diffused all over the body
surface, of a dusky hue, with very severe cerebral and
general constitutional disturbance. Broncho-pneumonia
and acute cerebral congestion, attended with severe convulsions
and followed by coma, were present in many of
the cases. Most of the fatal cases were due to one or
both of these complications. All the deaths were in
children of two years of age and under. In two cases
