Births.
The steadily-declining birth-rate in the country, generally, has its
counterpart in Deptford.
After allowing for inward and outward transfers, i.e., the addition
of 448 children born of Deptford parents outside the Borough, and the
deduction of 70 children born inside the Borough, but whose parents
reside normally outside its boundaries, the number of births registered
as belonging to the Borough was 1,860. This is equivalent to a birthrate
of 16-8 per 1,000 of the population and the second lowest on record.
Owing to a slowing in the decline of the death-rate this reduced
birth-rate represents only a natural increase of 3-5 per 1,000 of the
population and suggests the possibility, in a few years time, of a population
numerically either only slowly progressive or stationary.
