Illegitimate Births.
The illegitimate births numbered 67 or 2.5 per cent. of the total
births. These occurred in the several wards as follows :—
East 16 South 13
North 11 South-East 9
North-West 9 South-West 9
As far as can be ascertained, the occupations of the mothers in these
cases were :—Domestic servants 7; Factory hands 4 ; Barmaids 3:
Shop assistants 3; Drapers' assistants 3: Laundry workers 2;
waitresses 2; "No occupation" 4. The remaining births occurred
outside the Borough and the information as to occupation is not
available.
Under the provisions of the Notification of Births Act, 1907,
intimations have been received from medical men, parents and others
with respect to 2,556 births. Omitting still births, this gives a
percentage of births notified to those registered of 97.5.

1 he Superintendent Registrar has kindly furnished me with the
particulars. There were 976 marriages in the Borough during 1922 as
compared with 884 in the previous year. The marriage rate was equal
to 8.6 per 1,000 of the population as compared with 7.8 for the
year 1921.
