MILK AND DAIRIES (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1922, AND
ORDERS MADE THEREUNDER.
I have received the following report from Mr. Nicholson of the work
which he has carried out during the year under:—
(1) The Milk and Dairies (Amendment) Act, 1922, and the
various Orders and Regulations dealing with milk; and
(2) The Factory and Workshop Act in so far as it appertains to
Bakehouses.
In this connection I particularly wish to draw the attention of the Council
to the former.
It will be remembered that in my last Annual Report I expressed
dissatisfaction regarding the insanitary conditions and methods of several
of the registered dairies as they did not comply with the Milk and Dairies
Order. Since that time much work and great improvements have been
effected.
Three Conferences were held by your Officers with the Master Dairymen's
Association, and it is gratifying to be able to report that this
Association gave their support and every assistance.
This has had the effect of bringing into line all the dairymen operating
in your Borough, and all have expressed their willingness to co-operate
with the Public Health Authority in bringing their dairies and premises
into conformity with the Milk and Dairies Order.
From the following report it will be seen that a large number of
dairies have already been reconstructed, or are in process of reconstruction
and Mr. Nicholson is to be congratulated on this useful and very necessary
work.
At the end of 1932 there were on the Milksellers Registers.
Retail 394 names 388 premises.
Wholesale 36 ,, 36 ,,
Retail 62 ,, Outsiders
Wholesale 30 ,, ,,
During the year 1933, 61 persons were registered as retail milksellers,
14 as dairies, 44 for sale of milk in containers as received, 2
for use as distributing depots for sale of bottled milk on rounds, and
1 for consumption of milk on the premises only.
