The approximate weight of the house refuse collected was
30,110 tons. The Borough Treasurer, in his report for the year
ending Lady-day, 1898, gives the total cost of collection of house
refuse as £7,150 17s. 11d. Assuming that the ratio of increase
during the first three months of 1898 corresponded to that of 1897,
the cost of collection and disposal works out at 4s. 9d. per ton.
