Closure of Schools.—In July, the Local Government Board
issued a "Memorandum, prepared in the Medical Department, on the
circumstances under which the closing of Public Elementary Schools,
or the exclusion therefrom of particular children, may be required, in
order to prevent the spread of disease."
The Board also issued Model Bye-laws in respect of " Public
Bathing."
Collection of House Refuse.—During the year 1897,
the whole of the House Refuse of the Borough was collected twice
a week from each house, by the Corporation's own horses and carts;
the staff employed consisting of two dust inspectors and 46 men, who
require the exclusive daily use of 31 horses, 16 two-wheeled carts and
14 four-wheeled vans.
The staff were employed on 304 days and collected 24,088 loads,,
an increase of 641 loads over the previous year, or a daily average of
79.4 loads:—

The whole of the house refuse was deposited at various dust
shoots within the Borough, as under:—

The time taken in the above collection may be gauged by the
following Table, which shows the time of finishing on each working
day ; the time specified being the hour in each division when the last load started for the shoot.
