Notification of Births.—This is a permissive
Act, and it came up in due course for consideration
at the hands of the sanitary committee. It. was
not likely to be of any practical use unless a Health
visitor were appointed to follow up the notifications
by visits, where necessary, and by instructions as
to the care and bringing up of the child. This is
the course that has been generally followed where
the Act has been adopted, and mostly so in the
large towns with dense populations and where
many of the mothers are engaged in work. The
committee considered that at present there was no
pressing need for it and that the expense of another
appointment was not justified so that its adoption
was not recommended.
