SLAUGHTERHOUSES, etc. - There is no public abattoir, private slaughterhouse or
knacker's yard operating in the Borough.
SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1954 - Four applications for a licence as
a slaughterman, granted under the 1933 Act remained in operation till 30th September.
No applications for licences have been received under the provisions of the new Act.
INSPECTION OF MEAT AND OTHER FOODS - There are in the Borough 145 catering
establishments, 21 bakeries, 73 butchers' shops, 30 fish shops and 363 other retail
food premises subject to inspection and supervision. During the year inspections of
food were carried out as follows:= meat, 673, fish, 161; provisions, 318; vegetables
and fruit, 151; foodstuffs on hawkers' vehicles or stalls, 108; and other
foods, 475.
At retail premises 5,829 lbs. and 4,591 tins etc. of unsound food were seized by
or surrendered to the Sanitary Inspectors during the year. The following foods were
brought to the Department because the purchasers were not satisfied that they were fit
for human consumption;- Bread, 10 lemon curd, 1; sugar, 1; sponge cake, 1; Christmas
cake, 1: fish cakes, 4; savoury food, 1 and cordial, 1. In 14 cases foreign bodies
were found to be present cautions were issued in 11 cases while the Health Committee
issued formal warnings in 2 cases and instituted proceedings in one case which resulted
in a fine of £2. with 1½ guineas costs. The complaint in regard to sugar was not
established, but proceedings re the fish cakes brought a fine of £2. with 21/- costs.
The Christmas cake, on analysis, was found to be satisfactory, but the makers refunded
the purchase price.
Premises used for J the preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted, pressed
pickled or preserved food for sale95 are required under the Food and Drugs Act, 1938,
to be registered, and at the end of the year, 99 such premises were registered.
Under Section 11 of the Middlesex County Council Act, 1950, hawkers of food and
their storage premises require to be registered. At the end of the year, 63 hawkers
were on the register.
MUNICIPAL RESTAURANTS AND SCHOOL CANTEENS - There is no municipal restaurant in
the Borough, but during the year the 19 school canteens provided 1,337,076 meals.
By the provision of new schools and the replacement or improvement of school
canteens established during the war, the facilities for meals at schools are being
brought up to modern standards.

FOOD AND DRUGS SAMPLING During 1955 the following samples for analysis were taken in the Borough by the Public Control Department of the Middlesex County Council:-
