TO THE VESTRY

The Parish of St. fames’s Mestminster.
Reverend Sir, My Lords, and Gentlemen,
I beg now to lay before you a report on the nature
and amount of the mortality in the Parish of Saint
James's, Westminster, for the year 1870. This is
the sixteenth year of my having held the post of
medical officer of health, and the fifteenth annual
report I have had the honor of presenting you.
I have delayed presenting this report a little
longer than usual in order that I might do as
I did ten years ago under the same circumstances,
present you with some of the results of the taking
of the census in your Parish in the preceding April
of this year, as I had done that of 1861.
The Census of 1871.
Although the census of England and Wales in the
year 1871 was taken so late as the 3rd of April, the
Registrar General has already (July, 1871) published
a "Preliminary Report and Tables of the Population
and Houses enumerated in England and Wales, and
in the Islands in the British Seas." From this preliminary
report I extract a few particulars with
