These 16 deaths—11 of parishioners from St. Mary's Subdistrict,
and 5 of parishioners from St. John's—are included
in the total deaths (434), and throughout this report are
dealt with in the same manner as if they had actually
occurred in the parish.

Of the 434 deaths, 92 were of infants under 1 year of age,
138 of children under 5 years, and 87 of persons aged 65
years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was 125
deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it was 135; in
the twenty-seven largest provincial towns it averaged 155,
ranging from 117 in Norwich to 251 in Bolton. Of 50 other
provincial towns the highest rate was reached by Stockport,
where it was 252 per 1,000 births.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
31.8 per cent of the total deaths—21 were due to one or other
