While however this disease begins to show signs of decline, a
worse scourge is threatening in the form of Small Pox. For
some weeks Small Pox deaths have been gradually increasing in
London, and the disease appears to be spreading from East to
Western districts. I have watched with considerable anxiety its
gradual approach ; four cases which came under my notice
during the quarter were removed to the Small Pox Hospital, and
steps taken to prevent the further spread of the infection. We
cannot at this moment congratulate ourselves upon the immunity
from this disease, which we have enjoyed for the last four years.
The Small Pox Hospital is full ; the new Hospital for Fever at
Hampstead is also full; so that with much regret the Guardians
have been compelled to admit a few cases into the Workhouse
during the last 10 days, taking every possible precaution to
secure isolation and separate attention ; in fact, to prevent the
further spread of the disease.
The following number of cases were removed to the Fever
and Small Pox Hospital by the Fever Carriage ; and two bodies
of persons who died from a contagious disease were removed to
the dead-house:—October; 2 Small Pox, 2 Scarlet Fever,
1 Typhus. November ; 2 Small Pox, 6 Scarlet Fever. December
; 3 Small Pox, 1 Scarlet Fever.
The deaths of young children are lower than on some previous
quarters as the following numbers will show—174 ; 209 ; 171 ;
206 ; 162 last quarter.
