Various Crossings at the intersections of Streets,
and several Cab Stands, have been paved with the best
description of Granite Cubes.
The Carriageways have, as usual, been substantially
repaired, and by the aid of the (15 tons) Steam Road
Roller, manufactured by Messrs. Aveling and Porter,
the broken Granite has since October last been quickly
and firmly compressed, and a smooth surface obtained,
to the manifest saving of animal power. I believe
that further time and experience will prove that the
cost of maintenance of Roads rolled by this method,
will be reduced.
The closing of the thoroughfares for Carriage
traffic, subject to the sanction of the Metropolitan
Board of Works, during the repair of the Roads, has
greatly facilitated the operations of our workmen, and
compared with the old system of allowing Horses
and Vehicles to pass over the unfinished works, has
effected a saving of time and expense in their execution.
Three New Streets have been formed, and paved
by the Vestry under the powers of "The Metropolis
Management Acts" at the cost of Owners of Houses
abutting on such Streets.
Additional Streets have been completed by Owners
of property at their expense, and to my satisfaction,
and afterwards cleansed, watered and repaired at the
cost of the Vestry, which, with the previous extent,
