Diphtheria.
There were 501 notifications of this disease, with 70
deaths, in 1899, as compared with 313 notifications and 29
deaths in 1898. The cases were distributed as follows:—
Lewisham 396
Lewisham Infirmary 2
Park Hospital, Lewisham 18
All Saints' Boys' Orphanage (Lewisham) 16
Lewisham Industrial Schools 1
Sydenham 45
Penge 22
Blackheath 1
From this it will be seen that out of a total of 501 cases
for the whole District, 433 occurred in the Lewisham portion
of the District. Taking the Lewisham District in separate
Wards it is then found that the cases were distributed as
follows:—Blackheath Ward, 26; Lewisham Village Ward,
158; Lewisham Park Ward, 159; Brockley Ward, 34;
Catford Ward, 56.
The Wards therefore chiefly affected were the Lewisham Village Ward and the Lewisham Park Ward.
Comparing these figures with those of the last three years previous to 1899, as in the Table below, it will be seen that these two Wards have been the ones chiefly affected during the last four years.
