The number of deaths in public institutions in the District
amounted to 553; of these 324 were residents and
229 non.residents.
There were 283 deaths in the Lewisham Infirmary.

for Sick Children.

The deaths of 101 residents in the District were registered
as haying occurred in various hospitals, &c., outside
the District.
The death rate in England and Wales in 1899 was
18.3 per 1,000, which is higher than the rate in either of the
three years immediately preceding.
Marriages.
During the year 1899 there were 909 marriages in the
Lewisham District: of these there were 727 in the Parish
of Lewisham, of which 491 were celebrated in various
Churches, 65 in Dissenting places of worship, and 171 at
the Registrar's office.
In the Hamlet of Penge, during the same period, there
were 182 marriages: of which 142 were celebrated in the
various Churches, 20 in Dissenting places of worship, and
20 in the Registrar's office.
