No. 63, was given up by Mr. Christmas under sanction of the new
shops by the London County Council. The roadway was widened
15-feet in the middle, tapering off to nothing at each end.
At the corner of Houston-road and Perry-hill a very considerable
improvement was effected. The old outlet from Houstonroad
was very narrow, only 10-feet, 8-inches in one place. The
Board purchased sufficient land from Mr. James for £150 to make
the road 40-feet wide. 1 am very glad this work is completed as
this corner was dangerous to traffic.
At the corner of Newlands-park and Sydenham-road an
improvement of the road was made by the Board purchasing from
Mr. Gatfield, at a cost of £250, a strip of land to widen Newlands
Park. The kerb, channel, and tar pavement were relaid.
RECREATION GROUNDS.
Sydenham
Iron railings were fixed round some of the beds and in front
of the swings. These railings require extending in order to afford
complete protection to the beds. Half of the old wooden seats in
the ground which were very dilapidated, and had been repaired a
great deal, were entirely renewed.
Water was laid on to six new stand-pipes in the Ground so
that the beds may be watered in future.
Penge.
The remainder of the tar pavement was re-topped—part was
done last year. The front wall next Beckenham-road, which was
much cracked, was taken down and rebuilt.
DEPOTS.
A new shed, 104-feet long and 12-feet wide, was constructed
in the Home Park Depot for the making of artificial stone ; four
tanks were also built in which to soak the slabs when first made.
The small piece of ground rented by the Board in Wells-road was
taken over by the London County Council as a part of Sydenham
Wells Park. The Board now rent a piece of land from Mr. Adams
at the rear of some new shops built by him in Wells-road.
A plot of ground in Franklin-road, Penge, is now rented from
Mr. Fry as an additional Depot for Penge, This was urgently
