Births.
The registered births during the 52 weeks of the year
1873 amounted to 1779—males 914, females 865, showing
an increase of 86 over the number of births in 1872.
The birth-rate to population was 32 66 per 1000 or
about one birth to every 31 persons.
For the number of births in each separate portion of the
District see Table "VII.
In England the birth-rate was 357 per 1000.
In the United Kingdom, 35 5 per 1000.
Deaths.
The number of deaths registered in the Lewisham
District during the year 1873 was 791; of this number the
mortality amongst males was 413, amongst females 398,
being a difference of 16 between the sexes.
Notwithstanding the increase of population, the mortality
was only three in excess of that registered during the year
18*2; but 24 less than that of 1871, and 15 less than that
of 1870.
Ihe death-rate amounted to 1452 per 1000 population,
or at the rate of about one death to every 69 individuals.
The death-rate for all England amounted to 21.2 per
1000.

The mortality at different periods of life deserves some
comment.
