The work of the Inspectors for the year as derived from the
Table VI, embodied in the Medical Officer's Report, may be
summarized as follows:—
House drains repaired, cleansed, trapped, or ventilated
96
Privies and water-closets repaired, cleansed, supplied
with water, or new ones provided
91
New dust-bins provided and old ones repaired, &c.
147
New cisterns provided and old ones repaired, &c.
42
Removals of accumulations of dung and other
offensive matter
45
Removals of animals improperly kept
38
In the exercise of the Act for preventing Adulteration of
Food, 39 samples of food and drink have Avithin the year been
submitted to the Public Analyst of the District for analysis; of
these the great majority have been certified as unadulterated or
adulterated to snch an extent only as neither to be injurious to
health or fraudulently to increase the weight or bulk of the
article; the most important exception has been in the article of
milk, of which, it is feared it may be safely asserted, that far
more is sold mixed with water than in a pure state.
The remedy for this state of things is, however, very much
in the hands of the consumers themselves, for in this District any
rate-payer has, under the regulations of the Board, the privilege,
on payment of a fee of 2s. 6d., of obtaining an analysis of any
article of food or drink purchased within the District, and which
he may send or bring to the Officer of the Board, and can give
reasonable evidence of being in the condition in which it was
purchased.
FINANCE.
The extended operations of the Board, of which an outlin8
has been thus attempted, will naturally be expected to manifest
themselves in auy financial statement for the year; and this expectation
will be fully realized, for the expenditure of the Board
from Lady-day, 1873, to Lady-day, 1874, reaches the unprecedented
amount of £52,773.
Appended to this report is a Statement of the Receipts and
Expenditure of the Board during the year, and also a Statement of
their Liabilities and Assets at Lady-day, 1874, with Schedules, &c.,
giving far greater details of each item in the Statements than
have at any previous time been published.
