Public Institutions.—The Lewisham Workhouse.
About 400 persons passed through the Lewisham Union
Workhouse during the year.
12 births took place and 30 deaths.
The. District Hospital., Hither Green Lank.
The Board's Hospital has been of essential service in many
cases during the year in preventing the spread of epidemic
disease.
18 cases (12 mules and 6 females) have been admitted
during the year; 17 were cured and 1 died. The nature of
the diseases for which cases were admitted are mentioned
below.
Scarlet fever 6
Small-pox 9
Sore throat and rash 1
Measles 1
Chicken-pox 1

1 death took place in the Waterman's Asylum and 1 in
the Royal Naval Asylum.
North Surrey District School
The health of the inmates of the North Surrey District
School has been the reverse of good.
Opthalmia has been extensively prevalent, and it becomes
of the utmost interest to ascertain the causes upon which its
continuance depends.
From the contagious nature of this disease, when once
introduced, it is readily propagated, more especially so
amongst an ill-nurtured pauper population ; and nothing is
required other than the neglect of hygienic measures to
