Chemical Laboratory,
43 and 44, Holborn Viaduct, E.C.,
London, June 24th, 1893.
To the Chairman and Members of the Fulham Vestry.
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
I beg to present to you my report, as Analyst to the Vestry of
the Parish of Fulham, for the year ended on March 31st, 1893.
During the year, one hundred and one samples of Food and Drugs
were received by me for analysis. Of these samples, thirty-one were
obtained by Mr. Inspector A. A. Croucher, thirty by Mr. Inspector
W. H. Grrigg, and forty by Mr. Inspector C. B. Jones. The
Surveyor to the Vestry, Mr. J. P. Norrington, A.M.I.C.E., also
submitted to me for analysis one sample of white lead (date of
receipt, May 6th, 1892), and two samples of creosote oil (dates,
August 9th, 1892, and March 27th, 1893). The total number of
samples analysed and reported on was therefore one hundred and
four.
Taking the population of Fulham, shown by the census of April,
1891, namely 91,(340, the number of samples obtained during the
year, for analysis under the Sale of Food and Drugs and Margarine
Acts, was equivalent to one sample for every 907 persons.
The samples of food and drink comprised forty-nine of milk,
nine of butter, twenty-four of coffee, two of cocoa, five of pepper,
two of vinegar, three of port wine, and one each of gin, Scotch
whiskey and Irish whiskey. The only drugs received for analysis
were four samples of citrate of magnesia.
Below (Table I), is a tabular statement of the numbers of the
several articles submitted to analysis during the four quarters of the
year:—
