During the year the wood paving in the Fulham Road, laid with
plain deal blocks in 1885, has given out very badly, and I have repeatedly
advised the Vestry to have it entirely relaid before the winter. The
Vestry, however, on the 14th September, 1892, ordered the matter to
stand over for six months. Owing to the increasingly bad state of
the road, two efforts were made without success by members of the
Vestry to have this resolution rescinded, and in February, 1893, large
patches of the wood came up and the holes had to be filled in with
macadam.
On the 1st of February, 1893, instructions were given for plans
and specification to be prepared for paving the Crown Road, from the
Police Station to the Fulham Palace Road, and on the 1st March
tenders for doing the work were received, the lowest being £1,650.
On the 22nd March, the Works Committee passed a recommendation
that the portions of Sherbrook and Rylston Roads, much used
by omnibuses be wood-paved.
At a largely attended meeting of the Association of Incorporated
Municipal and County Engineers, held at the Bishop's Meadow, on
the 4th March, the following paper was read on the use of
Western Australian Woods, Karri and Jarrah for woo paving.
