Periodical visits arc made by the women inspectors to cases of
polio-myelitis to ensure that those left with any form of paralysis
receive treatment.
The London County Council has provided accommodation at
the Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton, for the treatment of
cases (either entering upon the second stage of the disease or
following discharge from hospital after undergoing correctional
treatment).
None of the cases notified in 1932 received treatment at this
institution.
Cerebro-Spinal Fever.
Notification furnishes an incomplete record of the total cases of
Cercbro-Spinal Fever which occur. During 1932 there were 9 cases
reported in the Borough (see subjoined table). In eight instances
the patient was removed to Hospital for treatment. There were
6 deaths. According to the Registrar General's classification the
number of deaths from this disease was 8.
An intrathecal injection of an adequate dose of anti-meningococcuh
serum given at the earliest opportunity, and continued daily
until convalescence is established, forms the basis of the treatment required tor this disease.
Continuous medical and nursing attention
is also most necessary, and for this reason it is advisable that every
case, with few exceptions, should be removed to Hospital.
