in a population of 51945; and that the population of
the entire Parish amounted to no less than 185943
persons.
3. At the Census which was taken early in April
of the present year, it was ascertained that the population
of Dulwich was 5590, that of Camberwell
59090, that of Peckham 71065, that of St. George's
50810, and consequently that of the entire parish
186555. These figures however represent not the
facts relating to the middle of 1880, but those relating
to the end of the first Quarter of 1881, and hence to
get at the mean population for the year 1880 a
deduction must necessarily be made. This correction
I have effected, not perhaps on sound mathematical
principles, but by a simpler process which yields
results quite as likely to be correct, namely, by
assuming that the total increase of population between
1871 and 1881 was divided equally between the ten
years included between these dates, and by then subtracting
three-fourths of the increase for one year
from the Census returns, that is by subtracting the
increase which may be assumed to have taken place
between the middle of the year 1880, and the Spring
of 1881. On these data the population of Dulwich
was 5474, that of Camberwell 57002, that of
