of 193 inhabitants of Bethnal Green who died in hospital outside
the Parish, these 193 deaths must be added making a net total
of 3040.
BIRTHS.
The births during the year were 5194 against 5158 in the
preceding year—an increase of 36. The excess of births over the
deaths was 2154; this is 154 fewer than last year as is shewn by
the subjoined table.

ANNUAL BIRTH AND DEATH RATES.
On the basis of the estimated population we shew a death rate
for the year 1886 of 23.45, this is 1.37 above that of last year,
and is considerably in excess of the General Metropolitan Rate,
which was only 19.9. It is also slightly above that of the Eastern
districts of London which was 22.5 per thousand. The rate in
the Western districts was 17.7; in the North 18.0; in the South
19.2; and in the Central 25.9.
As just mentioned, the General Metropolitan Death Rate for
1886 was 19.9, a mortality almost identical with that of the
previous year, which was 19.8. The rates for these two years
were the lowest on record since the present system of civil
registration was commenced.
