CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.
Under this head 544 deaths were recorded; of these Cancer caused
58; the chief organs affected were Stomach and Intestines, thirteen;
Uterus, ton; Liver, seven; Breast, eight.
TUBERCULAR DISEASE.
(Vide Table IV.)
Under this head are included Phthisis, Scrofula, Tuberculosis,
Rickets, & Tabes Mesenterica. The total number of deaths from this
group was 423. Phthisis caused 3.34, in ten of these the immediate
cause of death was HÅ“morrhage from the lungs.
The deaths from Tubercular diseases formed 13.7 per cent. of the
mortality from all causes, a rate of 3.29 per thousand population.
DEVELOPMENTAL DISEASES.
Seventy-five children died through being prematurely born. In
four the lungs never expanded, and nine were so deformed as to be
unable to live for more than a very limited period. Four had died
from Spina Bifida (two were operated upon in the London Hospital).
Four had diseased hearts, though one of these, a male, had lived to
the age of 21 years.
The deaths from natural decay were 117.
DISEASES OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.
Under this head are classed 344 deaths; of these no less than
125 were caused by Convulsions, and all except three were amongst
young children, of whom ninety-four were infants.
The convulsive diseases of infants, a group which includes those
just mentioned, and also the deaths from hydrocephalus, infantile
meningitis and dentition caused 153 deaths, 18 per cent. of the total
infantile mortality, a rate of 29.1 per thousand births.
RESPIRATORY ORGANS.
Exclusive of Phthisis the deaths from this group of diseases were
705, about 23 per cent. of the total mortality from all causes, a death
rate of 5.5 per thousand population.
