Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers have attended 3523 new cases of illness out of the
Workhouse, viz., 245 of small pox, 7 of measles, 19 of scarlet fever, 32
hooping cough, 107 of diarrhoea, 171 of fever, and 36 of erysipelas. In the
corresponding Quarter of last year, the number of cases of pauper illness
was 3853, including 56 of measles, 112 of scarlet fever, 54 of hooping
cough, 212 of diarrhoea, 142 of fever, and 27 of erysipelas.
Meteorology of Greenwich.
The returns of the Registrar General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the Quarter, has been 7'66 inches The total rain-fall
(including melted snow) at Greenwich, during the month of December, was
3-1 inches, or 1-2 inches above the average. During the corresponding
Quarter of the previous year, the rain-fall was 6.63 inches. The mean temperature
of the air has been 41.8°. The coldest day during the Quarter was
Sunday, the 25th December, when the thermometer indicated 9.8°, or 22.2
below the freezing point. In the corresponding Quarter of last year, the
mean temperature of the air was 42.9°.
"The total rain-fall during the year was 18-6 inches, showing a deficiency
of 6-8 inches, as compared with the average fall during 54 previous
years."
