The deaths from epidemic diseases in the entire District have been 124,
viz., 50 from small pox, 5 from measles, 28 from scarlet fever, 10 from
hooping cough, 12 from diarrhoea, and 19 from fever.
The deaths from pyaemia were 10, from erysipelas 16, and from puerperal
fever 1.
Diseases of the tubercular class have been fatal to 106 persons, viz.,
3 from scrofula, 15 from tabes mesenterica, 76 from consumption, and 12
from hydrocephalus. The proportion of deaths from this class of disease
to the total deaths is 1C-1 percent. The proportion of deaths from epidemic
diseases to the total deaths is 18*9 per cent.
The deaths from diseases of the organs of circulation were 42, viz.,
1 from aneurism, 1 from pericarditis, 1 from disease of the veins, 1 from
anaemia, and 38 from disease of the heart.
Two persons died from spinal meningitis.
The deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs were 128, viz., 68
from bronchitis, 46 from pneumonia, 1 from spasm of the glottis, 2 from
laryngismus, and 11 from other diseases of the lungs.
The deaths from diseases of the urinary organs have been 16; of these,
5 were caused by nephria, or Bright's disease, 2 by diabetes, 2 by nephritis,
and 7 from other diseases of the kidneys.
Convulsions caused the deaths of 28 children; 12 children died from
diseases of nutrition—atrophy and debility; 7 from teething, and 8 from
premature birth.
There were 5 deaths from syphilis; of these, 3 were of infants.
The deaths from violence, including those fiom accidents, negligencc,
aid from suicide, have been 45; of these, 8 were of children who were
suffocated in bed, 6 of persons who were scalded or burnt, 1 death occurred
from the inhalation of chloroform, 2 persons committed suicide, and a child
three years of age, was poisoned " by eating root of German white bean by
misadventure."
The number of inquests has been 79; of these, 7 were held on persons
who were killed by horses or vehicles in the streets. The total number of
fatal street accidents, from horses or vehicles, registered in London during
the year, is 198. In the corresponding Quarter of last year the number of
inquests was 74.
Uncertified Deaths.
The uncertified deaths were 17; all of these are recorded in the subDistrict
of Spitalfields.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age have been 231. This is 35.2
per cent, of the total deaths. The deaths of persons above 80 years of age
have been 8.
