The deaths from diseases of the heart were 26, and from aneurism 5.
The deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs were 128, viz., 49 from
bronchitis, 60 from pneumonia, and 19 from other diseases of the lungs.
The deaths caused by child-birth were 2.
The deaths from diseases of the urinary organs have been 18; of these,
11 were caused by nephria, or Bright's disease.
Convulsions caused the deaths of 18 children; 20 children died from
diseases of nutrition—atrophy and debility, 8 from teething, and 5 from premature
birth. There were 2 deaths from stricture of the oesophagus.
The deaths from the effects of the excessive use of alcoholic drinks were
4. There were 5 deaths from syphilis; of these, 3 were of infants. The
deaths from violence, including those from accidents, negligence, and from
suicide, have been 46; of these, 3 were of children who were suffocated in
bed, 7 of persons who were scalded or burnt, 2 deaths occurred accidentally
from drowning, 5 persons committed suicide—one of these was a patient in
the London Hospital, who, while unobserved, thrust some medicated wool
into his throat, and another, that of a domestic servant, aged 19, who
drowned herself in a water-butt.
The number of inquests has been 74. In the corresponding quarter of
last year the number was 87.
Uncertified Deaths.
The uncertified deaths were 34; of these, 23 are recorded in the subDistrict
of Spitalfields. The proportion of the uncertified to certified deaths
is, in the Whitechapel District, unusually large, it being no less than 5.1
per cent.
The deaths of children under 5 years of ago have been 271. This is
41.2 per cent. of the total deaths. The deaths of persons above 80 years of
age have been 18; 1 of whom had reached the advanced age of 90. and
another 92.
Patter Illness in the Disteict.
The Medical Officers have attended 3832 new cases of illness out
of the Workhouse, 56 of measles, 112 of scarlet fever, 54 of hoopingcough,
212 of diarrhcea, 132 of fever, and 27 of erysipelas. In the
corresponding quarter of last year, the number of cases of pauper
illness was 3891, including 6 of small-pox, 41 of measles, 25 of scarlet
fever, 25 of hooping-cough, 145 of diarrhcea, 149 of fever, and 28 of
erysipelas.
Meteorology of Geeenwich.
The returns of the Eegistrar General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the quarter, has been 6.63 inches. During the corresponding
quarter of the previous year, the rain-fall was 8.61 inches. The
mean temperature of the air has been 42.9°. In the corresponding quarter
of last year, the mean temperature of the air was 45.9°.
