It is hoped that greater progress will be made in the forthcoming
year to enable Nos. 1 and 2 Smoke Control Areas to come into operation in
October, 1962.
Clean Air Act. 1955.
Five notices of intention to instal furnaces with a rating
exceeding 55,000 British thermal units or more per hour were received and
the Council approved the plans of one installation where "prior approval"
was requested.
During the year 58 visits were made in connection with smoke
abatement.
Atmospheric Pollution - Recording.
The Council decided to instal smoke and sulphur dioxide recording
apparatus at Kingston Vale in the proposed No.1. Smoke Control Area and
the readings taken are tabulated.
The following tables show the daily average, and highest and lowest
concentrations of smoke expressed in milligrammes per 100 cubic metres and
sulphur dioxide concentration as parts per 100 million volumes of air for
the years 1959 and 1960.
